What is Steel Grating?

Steel grating is an open-grid flooring made from parallel bearing bars joined to cross bars and fused by forge weld—heat and pressure create a solid, one-piece joint for strength and dimensional consistency. The open pattern is self-draining so water, dirt, and debris don’t accumulate, and it allows air and light to pass through, helping keep platforms brighter and easier to maintain.

Built for demanding environments, steel grating delivers a high strength-to-weight walking surface with long service life. For slip control, it’s available with Plain or Serrated bearing bars (serrated is recommended for wet, oily, or sloped areas). Panels can be supplied to custom dimensions with cutouts to fit equipment, penetrations, and handrail posts, and they integrate cleanly with stairs and drainage details.

For durability, grating is typically finished hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123/A123M) after fabrication; untreated (black steel) is available when further fabrication or site finishing is planned. MB supplies stock panels for fast deployment and fabricates derivatives such as walkway flooring, stair treads, and drain & trench covers—all based on the same forge-welded bar grating platform.

Grating Flooring

Flooring/Walkway Grating

Robust, low-maintenance steel grating for platforms, catwalks, and access ways. The open grid is self-draining so water, dirt, and debris won’t build up, while the clean lines give a neat, professional look that blends with surrounding architecture. Built for harsh outdoor conditions and everyday industrial use. Available in custom dimensions to match your platform layout and support spacing.

Key features

  • High strength-to-weight for safe, solid footing
  • Self-draining surface reduces slip risks and housekeeping
  • Plain or Serrated bearing bars (Serrated for enhanced traction)

Finish options

  • Hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123/A123M) — default, for maximum corrosion protection
  • Untreated (black steel) — for further fabrication or site finishing

Typical applications
Platforms, maintenance walkways, mezzanines, pipe racks, service bridges, and access areas in industrial, infrastructure, and commercial sites.

Note: Load capacity varies by span and bar size — refer to the MB brochure for detailed selection.

Stair Tread Grating

Durable, anti-slip steel treads for industrial and commercial stairs. Choose the fixing and nosing you need, available in custom dimensions to suit your stair width and stringer layout.

Key features

  • Six standard configurations (T1–T6) covering fixing and nosing
  • With or without antislip nosing; nosing improves visual safety and helps sustain edge loads
  • Fixing options: Welded (no end plates) or Bolted (with end plates)
  • Surface options: Plain or Serrated bearing bars (Serrated for enhanced traction)

Finish options

  • Hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123/A123M) — default corrosion protection

  • Untreated (black steel) — for further fabrication or site finishing

Note:  Load capacity depends on span, bar size, tread width, and support spacing—refer to the MB brochure for selection.

Drain Cover Grating

Grating covers for channels, U-ditches, and sump pits—built for fast drainage and reliable load performance. Supplied in custom dimensions to match clear opening, frame type, and support layout.

Key features

  • T-Type: sits on angle frame with a center T-bearer — recommended for vehicle traffic
  • U-Type: angle-banded cover that sets on the concrete (no edge groove needed) — suited to pedestrian/passenger-car areas; add bearers if higher loads are required.
  • Surface options: Plain or Serrated bearing bars (Plain commonly used for vehicle-traffic surfaces).
  • Optional hardware: hinges, lifting lugs, locks; single or multi-panel layouts for easy access.
  • Compatible with new pours or retrofit frames.

Finish options

  • Hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123/A123M) — default corrosion protection
  • Untreated (black steel) — for further fabrication or site finishing

Typical applications
Road crossings, loading bays, car parks, plant areas, water-treatment channels, and perimeter drainage.

Note: Actual load bearing capacity depends on span, bar size, and support spacing—see the MB brochure and standard drawings for guidance.

Clips

Quick, surface-tightened fasteners for removable panels in areas without vibration.

  • Top clip types: M and Universal (fits multiple load-bar pitches)
  • Works with common grating pitches (30/40/60 mm) and heights; uses standard M8 hardware
  • Guideline: choose welded fixing for permanent or vibration-prone zones; use clips where periodic removal is needed

Typical applications (CLP): walkway panel restraint, removable inspection panels, access hatches.

Abrasive nosing

High-traction, antislip edging that improves visibility and stair safety.

  • Multiple lengths and backing material options
  • Suitable for new stairs or retrofit upgrades

Typical applications (Abrasive Nosing): stair edge upgrades, visibility marking at landings, replacement of worn nosings.

Note: Clip type/quantity and nosing sizes/backing options are provided in the MB brochure and standard drawings.
